Represented by Prof. Babatunde Bernard, his Senior Special Assistant (Technical), Akume commended SLTV’s operators, Metrodigital Limited, for their patriotic initiative in establishing the satellite television. He acknowledged the growing demand among Nigerians for alternative Satellite PayTV options and praised SLTV’s commitment to delivering real value in terms of service quality and affordability.
Highlighting Nigeria’s unique economic potential, Akume assured SLTV of the Federal Government’s full support in their legitimate business endeavors within the country’s broadcast industry. Dr. Ifeanyi Nwafor, the Managing Director of Metrodigital Limited, expressed regret over the impediments to pay TV growth in Nigeria due to policies promoting monopoly but noted positive steps taken by the government.
Nwafor emphasized that Nigerians could subscribe to SLTV’s package, offering access to 55 stations, with prices starting from N2,500. He attributed the sluggish growth of the pay-TV industry in Nigeria to monopolistic practices introduced by dominant players over the years, hindering innovation and service quality.
However, Nwafor acknowledged the Federal Government’s recent efforts to address these challenges, stating that they encouraged his firm’s investment in the industry. At the ceremony, Dr. Charles Ebuebu, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Broadcasting Commission, disclosed that the commission would consider calls from Nigerian pay satellite television subscribers for the introduction of pay-per-view options. He clarified that renegotiations with content providers would be part of the process if deemed applicable.
