The Federal Government has unveiled plans to boost electricity generation from the current 4000 megawatts to a range of 6000 to 6500 megawatts within the next three to six months, aiming to enhance the overall power supply. Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, conveyed this strategy during a meeting with heads of power agencies and industry stakeholders in Abuja on Monday.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the existing 4000 megawatts capacity, Adelabu emphasized the need for an increase to meet the growing demands for electricity. He outlined a target of reaching a minimum of 6000 to 6500 megawatts within the specified timeframe, citing the previous achievement of 5700 megawatts in November 2021 as evidence that the necessary infrastructure is in place.
Adelabu assured that he personally visited various generation companies and verified their capability to produce the targeted 6000 megawatts. However, he acknowledged that a significant portion of the installed capacity remains underutilized due to insufficient gas supply.
Highlighting the crucial role of gas supply in electricity generation, Adelabu indicated that once adequate gas supply is secured, the goal is to swiftly escalate power generation to the specified levels. He acknowledged the occasional improvements in the sector but stressed that a substantial leap in stable electricity supply is imperative.
The Minister addressed the concerns of Nigerian citizens, emphasizing their right to demand good governance, improved services, and a consistent enhancement in daily power supply. He reassured the public that the challenges were temporary and affirmed the commitment of the administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, to address the root causes promptly.
Adelabu revealed that the Ministry of Power and its affiliated agencies are working tirelessly to reverse the current situation and achieve stable power supply in a short period. He acknowledged the private sector’s role in electricity distribution but emphasized the need to compel Distribution Companies (DisCos) to perform optimally, ensuring that efforts in generation and transmission are not in vain. The Minister also disclosed discussions with the Chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to address DisCos’ performance issues.
In conclusion, Adelabu expressed optimism that resolving these challenges would contribute to a better quality of life for Nigerians, fostering industrialization, employment, economic growth, and overall industrial development.
