FIFA Decision Sparks Controversy As Themba Zwane’s Ban Is Extended
South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has suffered a significant blow after attacking midfielder Themba Zwane was handed a three-match suspension following his red card in Bafana Bafana’s Group A defeat to Mexico.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Zwane was dismissed in the 84th minute of South Africa’s 2-0 loss at the Azteca Stadium after a VAR review. FIFA confirmed on Wednesday that the midfielder was sanctioned for raising his arm illegally against Mexico winger Roberto Alvarado during an attacking move.
While a straight red card typically attracts a one-match suspension, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that the incident constituted serious foul play and imposed an additional two-match ban.
Although South Africa retains the right to appeal the decision, the ruling means Bafana Bafana will be without one of their most experienced players during a critical phase of the tournament.
The suspension compounds South Africa’s disciplinary woes, with midfielder Sphephelo Sithole also sent off during the encounter against Mexico.
Speaking after the match, head coach Hugo Broos accepted Sithole’s dismissal but questioned the decision to send off Zwane.
“The second red card is debatable,” Broos told reporters. “It was the Mexican player who was obstructing my player.
“That was the referee’s interpretation, and we have to respect it, but in my opinion, it was too soft a decision to warrant a red card.
“The first red card was understandable because their player was through on goal and Yaya brought him down.”
Mexico also ended the match with 10 men after defender César Montes received a red card deep into stoppage time, but the hosts had already done enough to secure all three points.
South Africa will now attempt to revive their World Cup hopes when they face Czech Republic in Atlanta on Thursday. The Czechs head into the fixture following a 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their opening Group A match.
