The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has indicated that the 2027 general election could be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi made the remark during an interview on Nevon HQ while responding to a question posed by a secondary school student about his future political ambitions.

The student had asked whether he would consider running for the presidency again if he contests in 2027 and fails to win.

In his response, Obi said the answer largely depends on how Nigeria’s political landscape evolves, particularly the country’s power-sharing arrangement, which traditionally rotates the presidency between the North and the South.

The former Anambra State governor explained that if he contests in 2027 and is unsuccessful, the presidency could return to the North in 2031 in line with the zoning principle.

He noted that by the time power potentially rotates back to the South after another cycle, he would be about 78 years old.

According to Obi, that reality makes it unlikely that he would still be interested in pursuing the presidency at that age, suggesting that 2027 may represent his last major bid for the nation’s highest office.

He said: “A secondary school student asked me whether I would run for president again if I contest in 2027 and do not win. I told him it would depend on how events unfold.

“Nigeria operates a zoning arrangement where power rotates between the North and the South, and that has a significant influence on political calculations. If I contest in 2027 and lose, there is a possibility that the presidency could shift to the North in 2031.

“By the time it rotates back to the South after that cycle, I would be around 78 years old, and I do not see myself actively seeking the office at that age. Based on the current political structure, 2027 may be my final serious attempt. Of course, politics is dynamic, and if circumstances change and the presidency remains in the South beyond 2027, another run may not be completely impossible, though it is not something I am banking on.”
