At the launch held at the State House in Abuja, Senator Tinubu said the initiative aims to nurture a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who can promote sustainability across schools, communities and campuses. She applauded the growing influence of young climate advocates, highlighting a poem presented by Esther Abraham, an SS3 student of Government Senior Secondary School, Mabushi, whose performance she described as deeply inspiring.
The First Lady handed out membership kits—comprising identity cards, handbooks and practical tools—to selected students, noting that they were essential instruments to guide their responsibilities. She recalled that her background in educational biology and past experience teaching environmental sanitation shaped her lifelong passion for environmental stewardship.
Tinubu outlined the objectives of the newly introduced clubs, which include advancing environmental preservation, protecting biodiversity, promoting responsible resource management and encouraging a culture of sustainability among young people. She added that the programme would also support innovation, alternative livelihoods and green entrepreneurship.
Under the initiative, secondary school participants will focus on maintaining clean school environments, recycling, tree planting, reducing plastic use and raising climate awareness. University-based societies will lead shoreline clean-ups, reforestation efforts and campus-wide advocacy for sustainable practices.
The First Lady emphasized that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises environmental responsibility, inclusive growth and youth empowerment. She also commended the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, and called on governors’ wives nationwide to strengthen support for their state environment commissioners.
