The decision followed about three weeks of consultations, screening, and internal discussions involving party leaders and stakeholders across the state. All 11 aspirants who initially indicated interest in the party’s governorship ticket were part of the process.
Prominent PDP figures participated in the negotiations, including former Governor Samuel Ortom, Senate Minority Leader Patrick Abba Moro, members of the state working committee led by Ezekiel Adaji, as well as representatives of key party blocs such as the G-14 and G-9 elders.
At the conclusion of the deliberations, Aondoakaa was selected as the consensus candidate, with the remaining 10 aspirants stepping down in his favour. Party sources said the decision was reached after wide consultations aimed at preserving unity within the party.
Although some aspirants, including Dennis Ityavyar and Dominic Ucha, reportedly expressed concerns over zoning arrangements, they eventually accepted the outcome and pledged support for the party’s decision.
Other contenders such as Tor Uja, Sebastine Hon, Tersoo Loko, and Tor Tiv Ato also agreed to back the consensus arrangement and remain committed to the party.
Following the announcement, former Governor Samuel Ortom commended the aspirants for embracing unity and urged them to work together ahead of the elections. Senator Patrick Abba Moro also described the consensus as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s electoral chances in Benue State.
In his acceptance remarks, Aondoakaa pledged to unite party members and work inclusively with all stakeholders to ensure victory in 2027. He thanked party leaders for their confidence in him and promised to build a strong and coordinated campaign.
Party leaders said the consensus approach was adopted to prevent internal divisions and present a united front ahead of the general elections.
