Former presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has said that the worsening condition of Nigeria and the urgent need for national rescue informed his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi made this known in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, where he explained the reasons behind his latest political move.

He said his departure from the ADC mirrors his earlier exit from the Labour Party, citing what he described as “severe, orchestrated litigation and internal crises” aimed at frustrating his political participation.

The NDC chieftain also called on the Federal Government to discourage unresolved court disputes and internal manipulation within political parties, warning that such practices weaken democracy.

According to him, his decision to join the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is not a departure from their core values but a continuation of their long-standing political mission.

In his statement, Obi said:

“Yesterday, I formally joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside my dear brother, Engr. Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, with one clear purpose: to continue the struggle for a new Nigeria built on justice, competence, accountability, and compassion for the ordinary Nigerian.

“This decision was not made out of anger, personal ambition, or convenience. It followed deep reflection on the condition of our nation and the urgent need to rescue Nigeria from its current dangerous trajectory.

“I have always believed politics should be about the people, not individuals or personal gain. Today, millions of Nigerians are struggling to afford basic needs, businesses are collapsing, children are losing hope, and the future feels uncertain.

“I left the ADC for the same reason I left the Labour Party: persistent litigation and internal crises deliberately structured to hinder meaningful participation in the electoral process. I remain grateful to the leadership of the ADC, especially Senator David Mark, for the opportunity to serve. I also appreciate my brother, Atiku Abubakar, and other respected leaders in the party.

“As we move into the NDC, I appeal to the Nigerian Government to avoid enabling internal crises and unresolved legal battles within political parties. Democracy must not be used as a tool against the people. Strong opposition is essential for a balanced democracy.

“Nigeria is currently facing severe economic hardship, rising poverty, insecurity, business collapse, and growing public frustration. At such a time, leadership must focus on competence, character, and compassion—not division or propaganda.

“Our move to the NDC is not a rejection of our values but a continuation of our mission to build a Nigeria where leadership is service, institutions work effectively, and every citizen lives with dignity and hope.

“I remain committed to working with Nigerians across all divides. The challenge before us is greater than any individual or party—it is about the future of our nation.

“I thank Nigerians, especially the youth and women, for their resilience and urge them not to lose hope. Nations are changed by persistence, not despair.
