According to a statement released by the Publication Secretary of the Special Bulletin, Bala Abdullahi, on July 27, 2024, the suspects, identified as David Iluebe from Edo State and Chike Eke from Delta State, infiltrated a lecture hall in the Faculty of Engineering. They introduced themselves as department lecturers and pressured 100-level students to purchase a set of four textbooks—covering Use of English, Statistics, Nigerian People and Culture, and Algebra and Geometry—under the threat of failing their courses if they did not comply.
The concerned students, fearing academic repercussions, bought multiple copies of the books. However, the suspects were arrested on July 25, 2024, after security personnel intervened following a tip-off.
During initial questioning, the suspects claimed to be the authors of the books and admitted to the charges, explaining that they were resorting to this scam due to unemployment. They also revealed that this was their second attempt at such fraud, having previously targeted Kano State Polytechnic earlier in the year.
The statement noted that the books in question were of poor quality and likely pirated. This incident highlights a troubling trend of impostors infiltrating educational institutions to exploit students.
Abdullahi stated that the suspects would be handed over to the police for further action and that students would be informed about such scams. He also advised students and the public to remain vigilant against impersonators and assured that increased surveillance would be implemented to prevent future occurrences.
