Fresh Twist In Power Game As Senate Reopens Presidential Path With New Decision
The Nigerian Senate on Thursday reversed its earlier amendments to the Senate Standing Orders, a move that reopens the contest for key leadership positions in the 11th National Assembly ahead of 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The decision effectively restores the eligibility of several ranking politicians, including figures such as Hope Uzodimma and Adams Oshiomhole, to potentially vie for the position of Senate President.
Earlier in the week, the Senate had introduced amendments aimed at tightening eligibility requirements for presiding and principal offices in the upper chamber.
Under the now-reversed changes, only senators with at least eight years of uninterrupted service in the Senate would have been eligible to contest for the offices of Senate President and Deputy Senate President.
The amendment also extended to other principal positions, with Order 4 stipulating that nominations for presiding offices must strictly follow ranking criteria, including former Senate Presidents, former Deputy Senate Presidents, former principal officers, senators with at least one completed term, former House of Representatives members, and first-time senators where necessary.
Order 5 further provided that any senator seeking a principal office must have served at least two consecutive terms immediately before nomination.
If retained, the amendment would have disqualified incoming senators in 2027 who were not members of both the 9th and 10th Senate from contesting for major leadership roles, including Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Senate Leader, Chief Whip, and Minority Leader.
Before the proposed changes, any ranking senator with a minimum of four years in the National Assembly was eligible to contest for presiding offices.
However, lawmakers later expressed concerns that the revised rules could trigger constitutional disputes and create unnecessary political tension within the chamber.
They also emphasised that the Senate Standing Orders must align with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and internationally accepted legislative standards.
As a result, the Senate resolved to rescind the amendments and restore the previous provisions governing eligibility for leadership positions.
