Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1, Shitta/Ogunlana Ward, in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State.

In the letter, he stated that his resignation takes immediate effect, formally ending his membership in the party.

The former spokesperson expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as National Auditor and later as National Publicity Secretary.

He also appreciated members of the party’s National Working Committee for their cooperation and support during his time in office, describing his experience on the committee as rewarding.

Explaining his decision, Johnson said the current political atmosphere in the country demands a broader opposition realignment and stronger collaboration among political forces.

According to him, his next political move would focus on building a more united opposition platform in the interest of Nigeria and its citizens.

Although he did not officially disclose his next destination, sources within the NNPP told Punch that he is expected to align with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other Kwankwasiyya figures in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Sources familiar with the development claimed Johnson has maintained a long-standing political relationship with Kwankwaso and may be considered for a strategic publicity or regional leadership role within the NDC.

The resignation comes shortly after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Kwankwaso reportedly joined the NDC in Abuja as coalition talks continue ahead of the next election cycle.
