Nishtar disclosed this via her official communication channels on Thursday, emphasizing Gavi’s commitment to support Nigeria in addressing the cholera crisis. She noted that the organization had swiftly mobilized emergency vaccine supplies in response to the escalating outbreak, exacerbated by contaminated water and poor sanitation, particularly during the rainy season.

As of July 15, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,623 suspected cases of cholera across 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory, resulting in 103 fatalities. The outbreak has spread to 187 Local Government Areas, with young children predominantly affected.

In her statement, Nishtar expressed optimism about the upcoming vaccine delivery from Gavi’s global stockpile, highlighting ongoing production efforts to meet global demand for cholera prevention. She underscored the collaborative efforts with partners such as UNICEF and WHO to support Nigeria’s Ministry of Health and NCDC in containing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable populations.

Responding to Nishtar’s announcement, Prof. Muhammad Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, acknowledged Gavi’s swift action in facilitating early access to cholera vaccines. He affirmed the government’s commitment to deploying vaccines effectively and enhancing national response efforts through coordinated multi-sectoral initiatives.

Pate also reiterated the government’s dedication to improving water and sanitation infrastructure across the country as part of broader measures to prevent future cholera outbreaks.
