Speaking during the 58th anniversary celebration of Rivers State’s creation at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Ibas described the situation as a solvable political issue that requires negotiation rather than confrontation.

“I believe this crisis is not beyond resolution. It is a political disagreement, not a war. And as with most conflicts—no matter how long or bloody—negotiations often pave the way to peace,” Ibas said.

He referenced international examples of longstanding political conflicts that were eventually settled through bold dialogue and leadership, noting that resolution doesn’t require the total erasure of differences, but rather a willingness by leaders to compromise for the greater good.

While calling for sober reflection, Ibas lamented that the current state of affairs falls short of the ideals envisioned by Rivers State’s founding fathers.

“What we are seeing today is not what our forebears fought for. The people are watching, and they deserve leadership that prioritizes their interests,” he stated.

He urged political leaders to rise above personal ambitions and assume responsibility for resolving the crisis in the best interest of the people.

Backing President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, Ibas described the intervention as timely and necessary to prevent chaos.

He also expressed disappointment in some elders and religious figures who, instead of seeking constructive solutions, have taken partisan positions.

“I wonder where these voices were when politicians were exploiting the situation for selfish ends,” he remarked, calling on citizens to reflect on the collective failures that led to the current impasse.
