Highlighting the Pope’s historical connection with Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized that such virtues resonate deeply with the values of unity and compassion.

In a post on his official account following his audience with the newly installed pontiff in Rome, Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to promoting global peace, unity, and progress—without prejudice to race or religious belief.

“Today, at the Vatican, upon the personal invitation of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I joined world leaders and millions of Catholics in witnessing the beginning of a new papacy,” the President wrote.
“Pope Leo XIV’s humility, history with Nigeria, and message of peace remind us of the moral leadership the world desperately needs.

“As a nation rich in faith and diversity, Nigeria stands firm in its mission to bridge divides—across faiths, races, and regions—for peace, progress, and the good of all humanity.”

He concluded with a prayer: “May the Almighty guide the Holy Father and strengthen all who labour for a more just and compassionate world.”

Earlier reports confirmed that Tinubu arrived in Rome on Saturday evening to participate in the ceremonial mass marking the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

Upon arrival, he was received by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, who hosted the Nigerian President to a private dinner. The meeting featured diplomatic discussions centered on interfaith cooperation and mutual global concerns.
