Represented by Dr. Ejeh Alexander Usman, Director of Polytechnics and Allied Institutions at the Federal Ministry of Education, the minister emphasized that the allocated funds aimed to tackle critical issues such as hostel accommodation, classroom infrastructure, and water supply within the polytechnic system. This allocation marks a significant departure as it is the first time such substantial funds have been directed to polytechnics, mirroring previous allocations to universities.
Acknowledging the protracted advocacy efforts of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) spanning from 2013 to 2022, Minister Mamman underscored the prolonged struggle to secure this financial provision. He expressed optimism that future disbursements would be more expeditious. The N15 billion allocation was evenly distributed among federal, state, and military polytechnics nationwide.
Dr. Suleiman Umar, Rector of Kaduna State Polytechnic, seized the opportunity to implore the minister for the prompt settlement of the outstanding 10 percent contract funds owed to contractors. He highlighted the federal government’s earlier allocation of N830 million to Kaduna Polytechnic in October 2023 as part of the 2022 NEEDS assessment fund.
These funds were utilized for the construction and equipping of classrooms and offices, as well as the provision of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, enhancing the educational environment and resources available to students and staff alike.
