President Bola Tinubu’s administration has sanctioned the allocation of N25 billion to bolster the operations of both the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). This significant move was officially disclosed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate.
Underlining the government’s steadfast commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and realizing Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) nationwide, Pate emphasized the paramount importance of this allocation.
In an official statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Deworitshe Patricia, in Abuja on Sunday, it was highlighted that the approval of a Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) and the Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme (NHSRIP) signals a pivotal step towards comprehensive health transformation, rejuvenation, and accessibility.
Pate further elaborated on discussions concerning the overhaul of Nigeria’s primary healthcare system through SWAp, stressing the imperative need for reforms in the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), encompassing its programs, operations, accountability mechanisms, and public trust.
He also revealed that all states alongside the Federal Capital Territory have unanimously endorsed a remediation plan aimed at elevating healthcare services for the Nigerian populace.
Addressing the need for revised guidelines to prioritize healthcare access for the underserved, particularly aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates and out-of-pocket expenses while ensuring consistent quality across primary healthcare facilities, Pate reiterated the ministry’s commitment.
Quoting the minister, Channels Television reported, “Recognizing the imperative for a more robust governance framework and clearer directives, the Ministry and its development partners are resolutely dedicated to ensuring healthcare accessibility for Nigerian women, children, and all citizens, especially those in vulnerable groups.”
Aligned with the objectives of NHSRIP, the overarching aim is to mitigate the necessity for patients to embark on arduous journeys for medical care, thereby significantly enhancing the qualitative and equitable health outcomes for all Nigerians.
