Addressing reporters on Monday, Governor Bago emphasized that the restriction only applies to bulk purchases of food from local markets to neighboring countries and not within Nigeria.
Contrary to some reports, he clarified that there is no ban on the sale and transportation of food items purchased in Niger State markets to other states in the country. The governor explained that the decision was taken to regulate sales and prevent exploitation by smugglers and middlemen.
Governor Bago expressed concern about the activities of saboteurs and smugglers who exploit local farmers and divert agricultural produce to international markets. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers and the negative impact of unchecked food exportation on the local economy.
To protect local industries and ensure fair market prices for farmers, the governor stated that controlling the level of sales became necessary. He emphasized the need for farmers to avoid selling everything overnight and resist the temptation of excessive cash offers, which often lead to exploitation.
Governor Bago drew attention to the detrimental effects of unregulated food exportation on the local economy, citing instances where agricultural resources were exploited, affecting the state’s factories and causing food inflation.
He acknowledged the positive results of the measures taken to address these issues, pointing out that it has helped reduce prices and curb the stock movement of food from Niger to other states within Nigeria.
Governor Bago emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address challenges in the agricultural sector and reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting local farmers and ensuring food security in the country. He underscored the need for sustained efforts to intensify these measures, considering the limitations of the African Free Trade Agreement and the potential negative impacts of uncontrolled food exports.
