The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this directive during an inspection of the Savage/Elegbata/Bombata Drainage Channel on Thursday. The move is part of the state’s urban regeneration efforts aimed at enhancing infrastructure and addressing environmental issues.

In a statement made available to Naija News, Wahab emphasized the negative impact of human activities in the area, which contribute to flooding and pose risks to lives and properties.

“I have instructed that the shop and stall owners be served with abatement notices. We will clear these violations and continue maintenance work while revisiting the contract to include these two collectors,” he stated.

The commissioner also pointed out the illegal conversion of spaces under the Apongbon Bridge into livestock markets, ordering the immediate relocation of traders to designated areas.

“What we’ve seen is concerning. People have constructed structures on setbacks and drainage channels, and when you do that, how can you expect these infrastructures to be maintained?” Wahab said. “We have misused these infrastructures, and I’ve directed the appropriate department to serve abatement notices. If there’s no compliance, enforcement will follow.”

Wahab also warned that environmental laws would be strictly enforced if there is no adherence to the directive. He added that all affected traders would be monitored after the 48-hour deadline, and violators would face penalties.
