While legal experts, political stakeholders, and organizations such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have strongly criticized the move, supporters, including chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have defended the President’s intervention. Critics argue that Tinubu’s decision raises constitutional concerns, with the NBA warning that such actions undermine democracy and due process. Similarly, the PDP rejected Fubara’s suspension, calling it an infringement on the rights of Rivers State citizens.

Former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar also condemned the state of emergency, describing it as a dangerous precedent that could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy.

However, some political figures, including APC chieftain Obidike Chukwuebuka, have praised Tinubu’s intervention. In a statement to Vanguard on Wednesday, Obidike commended the President for preventing Governor Fubara’s impeachment and argued that Fubara “owes a debt of gratitude” to Tinubu for stepping in to de-escalate the crisis.

Obidike cited Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the President the authority to declare a state of emergency during a crisis, temporarily suspending the powers of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and other state institutions to restore order.

Although the details of the alleged impeachment plot against Fubara remain unclear, Tinubu’s actions have undoubtedly reshaped the political landscape in Rivers State. The President’s commitment to peace was evident in his recent meeting with Governor Fubara and key stakeholders, where he emphasized the need for unity and cooperation.

“As the situation continues to unfold, Governor Fubara’s political future remains closely linked to President Tinubu’s influence,” Obidike remarked, highlighting the far-reaching implications for Rivers State’s political trajectory.
