Gynaecologists emphasized that cholera poses severe risks during pregnancy, potentially leading to devastating outcomes and exacerbating Nigeria’s already high maternal mortality rates if immediate measures are not implemented to curb its spread.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that cholera infections during pregnancy are associated with significant fetal mortality rates, particularly in cases where severe dehydration occurs.
Physicians highlighted that cholera can lead to sudden fatalities among pregnant women, especially those already malnourished and experiencing early pregnancy symptoms such as severe vomiting due to dehydration.
In addition to maternal risks, health specialists, speaking exclusively to PUNCH Healthwise, warned of adverse consequences for unborn babies should their mothers contract this acute diarrhoeal infection.
These concerns arise amidst a recent surge in cholera cases across several Nigerian states, notably impacting areas like Lagos, Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, and Nasarawa.
Cholera, a highly contagious disease transmitted through contaminated food and water, is caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Poor sanitation exacerbated by seasonal rains has contributed to the current outbreak, compromising water sources and increasing the prevalence of cholera cases.
Given the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians, pregnant women are particularly vulnerable due to hunger, malnutrition, and limited access to safe drinking water, making them more susceptible to infections.
Dr. Joseph Akinde, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and former chairman of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, stressed the peril of cholera during pregnancy, underscoring the potential for severe dehydration to endanger both mother and fetus.
Akinde cautioned, “Pregnant women must avoid cholera infection at all costs. If infected, prompt treatment is crucial to prevent adverse outcomes. Severe dehydration can lead to maternal mortality, stillbirth, or miscarriage, particularly affecting those in the first trimester and experiencing early pregnancy symptoms.”
He further emphasized, “Cholera’s impact during pregnancy is markedly severe due to its dual effect on both mother and fetus, necessitating urgent and aggressive treatment to mitigate catastrophic consequences.”
Experts recommend pregnant women ensure the safety of drinking water and food sources to minimize the risk of cholera infection, stressing the critical importance of proactive measures to safeguard maternal and fetal health.
Citing previous studies and reports, health specialists reaffirmed that cholera infections during pregnancy significantly elevate risks of stillbirths, premature delivery, and maternal mortality, highlighting the urgent need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures amidst the current outbreak.
