The association raised concerns about the exclusion of medical and dental lecturers in the selection process for the Vice-Chancellor position at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. It is also advocating for harmonizing the retirement age of medical and dental consultants to 70 years to reduce the outflow of doctors from the country.

Furthermore, MDCAN seeks the alignment of medical lecturers’ compensation with the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) to address issues with entry-level placements, pensions, and overall earnings.

MDCAN National President, Prof. Muhammad Muhammad, provided an update to Punch on Thursday regarding ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders. Plans are underway to formalize MDCAN’s demands in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government.

“We held discussions with the Ministry of Health, the Minister of Labour, the National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission, and other stakeholders, though the Ministry of Education was not present,” Muhammad stated. “We went through each issue, identified areas of disagreement, and mapped a path forward where we reached consensus. The Health Minister is now communicating with the Ministries of Education, Finance, and Labour on specific issues they need to address.”

Muhammad noted that the Health Minister is preparing letters to the Ministry of Education on lecturer exclusion, the Head of Service on retirement age harmonization, and the Federal Executive Council for approval to facilitate the implementation process.

MDCAN’s request regarding lecturer emoluments under CONMESS goes beyond the Ministry of Health’s jurisdiction; therefore, the ministry is writing to the Secretary of the Government of the Federation for further action.

“Once we receive the letters, we’ll present them to our members at an emergency meeting on Monday. If the terms are acceptable, we’ll proceed accordingly. If not, we will move forward with our own decision,” he concluded.
