Voters In Ondo Blame Political Parties As Banks Run Out Of Cash During ElectionAs the Ondo State governorship election draws near, residents are grappling with severe cash shortages across commercial banks in the state, leading to widespread frustration. Sources confirm that politicians from the major political parties have been making large withdrawals from banks, allegedly to stockpile funds for vote-buying.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Customers at several banks in Ondo have reported being unable to withdraw the amounts they requested, citing cash shortages attributed to these political withdrawals. Bank insiders claim that high-ranking political figures, particularly from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have been involved in withdrawing substantial sums of money with the help of bank managers.
A source within a new generation bank revealed that politicians had been withdrawing millions of naira in the past week. āPoliticians are colluding with bank managers, who allow them to withdraw large sums daily. This has depleted the available cash for ordinary customers,ā the source said.
Bank customers are expressing dissatisfaction, claiming that when they attempt to withdraw cash, they are limited to small amounts. Tunde, a frustrated customer in Akure, recounted his experience: āI went to my bank to withdraw N50,000, but I was told I could only take N2,000. They explained it was because they hadnāt received enough cash from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).ā
Others have shared similar stories, claiming that they were unable to withdraw larger sums from their accounts. āI went to withdraw N30,000 but was only given N10,000 and told that the branch didnāt have enough cash,ā one customer said.
Managers at various banks have confirmed the situation, explaining that a large portion of the available funds is being withdrawn by political figures. One anonymous bank manager said, āThe cash in circulation is very low, not just in Ondo, but nationwide. The situation is worsened by the large sums politicians are withdrawing for campaign logistics and, allegedly, vote-buying.ā
Politicians from all parties are said to be involved in the withdrawals, but it is the ruling APC and the PDP that have come under the most scrutiny for exacerbating the cash shortage. āThey are withdrawing money to ensure they have funds for vote-buying on election day,ā a source claimed.
Both the PDP and APC have denied the allegations. PDPās Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, dismissed the claims, asserting that the party had no need to buy votes. āWe have no reason to engage in vote-buying. The popularity of our candidate, Agboola Ajayi, and his track record will secure our victory,ā Peretei said.
On the other hand, the APCās Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, also rejected the accusations, calling them an attempt to tarnish the partyās reputation. āThese claims are false. Our party is committed to a fair and transparent election process. We trust the people of Ondo to make the right choice based on our candidateās performance,ā Otaloro stated.
Despite the denials from both parties, the situation has left many voters in Ondo State worried about the integrity of the upcoming election, with some calling for stricter monitoring of cash withdrawals in the days leading up to the vote.
