Beard, aged 47, was one of the most decorated coaches in English women’s football, famously guiding Liverpool to consecutive WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 before returning for a second spell in 2021.
Confirming the postponement, Aston Villa said: “Following the tragic death of former Liverpool Women’s head coach Matt Beard last night, Liverpool’s players were rightly offered the opportunity to postpone today’s Barclays WSL fixture. We apologise to fans for the late notice and inconvenience but ask for understanding at this sad time. Details of a rearranged fixture will follow. Our thoughts and condolences remain with Matt’s family.”
Beard began his managerial career with Millwall Lionesses in 2008, achieving promotion in his first season. He later spent three years at Chelsea, guiding them to an FA Cup final, before making history with Liverpool. His career also included spells with Boston Breakers in the U.S., West Ham, Bristol City, and most recently Burnley.
During his second stint with Liverpool, he secured their return to the top flight and delivered a mid-table finish the following year.
Tributes poured in across the women’s game on Sunday. Burnley’s National League tie with West Brom was also postponed, while other clubs held a minute’s silence. Chelsea honoured their former manager with a pre-match display before their clash with Leicester.
In their tribute, Liverpool described him as “an extremely committed and successful manager, a man of integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone at the club. Rest in peace, Matt.”
