Mutfwang recently announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, a move the Forum described as being in Plateau State’s best interest.
In a statement issued Monday, January 5, in Abuja and signed by Chairman Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the Forum revealed that it led the efforts that facilitated the governor’s defection and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen the APC in the North-Central region.
The Forum said its campaign to bring Mutfwang into the APC was motivated by the desire to see him operate in a political environment rooted in unity, peace, and development.
“We, the North-Central APC Forum, extend a warm welcome to Governor Caleb Mutfwang as he formally joins the APC family, where unity, peace, and progress flourish, and ethnic and religious differences are set aside,” the statement read.
It added, “Our efforts to bring Governor Mutfwang to the APC were driven by our wish to see him operate in an environment free from the divisive ethnic and religious politics that prevailed in his former party.”
The Forum stressed its support for the governor’s defection, citing belief in his good intentions for Plateau State.
“We backed his move because we know he has a genuine desire to develop Plateau State and to serve the people well,” it said.
While welcoming Mutfwang, the Forum advised him against retaining or associating with officials who promote ethnic or religious agendas, warning that such influences are incompatible with the APC’s progressive ideals.
Zazzaga noted that during Mutfwang’s tenure in the PDP, some officials pursued divisive politics, which was a key reason for encouraging his move to the APC.
“Now that he is in the APC, we expect him to work with people truly committed to Plateau State’s development, not those driven by narrow ethnic or religious interests,” the statement said.
The Forum also called on the governor to unite the people of Plateau State, ensure inclusive governance, and work closely with President Tinubu on security challenges in the state.
“He should bring together all citizens, regardless of ethnic or religious differences, so that the dividends of democracy reach every corner of Plateau State,” Zazzaga said.
The group urged Mutfwang to embrace the principles of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assert full control over his administration, and resist undue influence from external actors.
“He should govern without fear or favour, focusing solely on the people,” the statement added.
The Forum revealed it faced intimidation while campaigning for Mutfwang’s defection but remained resolute due to its belief in his leadership.
“Some opposed our efforts, fearing his defection would affect their political ambitions. Despite the pressure, we persevered because we believe in what he represents,” it said.
Finally, the Forum highlighted that Mutfwang’s presence in the APC aligns with its broader political objectives, including its earlier endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
“We pledged to deliver six million votes for the APC in the next general election, and Governor Mutfwang’s membership in the party will help achieve this goal,” the statement concluded.
