UCH Management Warns Workers, Including Doctors, Against Night Duty Boycott
The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, issued a stern warning to its staff, particularly doctors, cautioning them against avoiding night duties, emphasizing that failure to report for duty would be at their own risk.
This warning comes after the hospital workers, represented by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), announced their decision to suspend night duties. The action was prompted by the disconnection of power supply to the hospital by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, citing unpaid electricity bills totaling N495 million.
JAC Chairman, Oladayo Olabampe, stated that until the electricity supply was restored, the workers would only operate between 8 am and 4 pm. Additionally, they threatened to commence a seven-day strike if the hospital wasn’t reconnected by April 9th.
However, there was a disagreement between the JAC Chairman and the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, ‘Funmi Adetuyibi, regarding the proposed reduction in operational hours.
While Oladayo Olabampe insisted on sticking to the 8 am – 4 pm work schedule, Adetuyibi argued that such an arrangement would be unfeasible. She affirmed that the hospital’s operations were ongoing 24 hours a day, with staff attending to patients round the clock.
Adetuyibi emphasized that the management had communicated its stance to the union, opposing any reduction in working hours. They reiterated that all staff should fulfill their duties as scheduled, and failure to do so would be at their own risk.
As tensions persist between the hospital management and workers, the situation underscores the challenges faced by healthcare facilities amidst utility issues and financial constraints.
