The House’s decision followed the endorsement of an urgent motion of public significance presented during the Wednesday plenary by Awaji-Inombek Abiante, in accordance with Order 8 Rule 4.
In his presentation, Abiante expressed deep concern over the recent and ongoing gruesome murders of young women, particularly female university students, allegedly at the hands of their boyfriends for ritualistic purposes.
Abiante emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding young women and all Nigerians, a principle enshrined in section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
He cited instances such as the murder of Augusta Osedion, a final year student at Leads City University, who was killed by her boyfriend Benjamin Best, known as “killaboi,” in Lagos in July 2023.
Additionally, he mentioned the case of Miss Oghenefejiro Ochuko, a final year student at Ambrose Ali University, who was also killed by her boyfriend Victor Ochonogor in Benin in August 2023, along with numerous unreported cases.
The lawmaker expressed dismay over the recent killing of 20-year-old Miss Justina Otuene, a University of Port Harcourt undergraduate student, by Damian Okoligwe, who is also a student at the same university.
This disturbing trend of killings appears to have become alarmingly frequent, with several other unaccounted for missing females.
Abiante suggested that the culprits of these horrendous crimes may not be working alone but may be part of organized cartels. He lamented that young women have become extremely vulnerable.
Furthermore, the legislator voiced concern about the discovery of some of the missing victims’ lifeless bodies, often with no leads to the perpetrators.
These killings share common characteristics, including the dismemberment of victims’ bodies and the removal of vital organs.
Consequently, the House called upon the Inspector General of Police to assemble a dedicated team to launch a comprehensive investigation aimed at uncovering the identities of those responsible for these crimes and ensuring their prosecution.
