The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the conduct of private Internet Service Providers (ISPs) following allegations of consumer exploitation.
The initiative stems from a motion introduced during the plenary session by Leke Abejide on Thursday, June 6.
In his presentation, the lawmaker underscored the impunity with which many ISPs operate, offering substandard services and exploiting consumers through unregulated pricing and service quality.
He emphasized the detrimental impact of ISP inefficiencies and exploitative practices on businesses and the economy at large.
Abejide proposed that by addressing these issues and fostering transparency, the government can create a fairer digital landscape that empowers citizens, stimulates economic growth, and enhances societal welfare.
The legislator recounted an instance of an ISP in Abuja charging customers a fixed monthly fee despite frequent service interruptions. He criticized the company for misleading customers with various tariff plans, including one that fails to deliver uninterrupted service for even half of the month.
Additionally, the House urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other relevant authorities to establish a consumer protection framework. This framework should incorporate mechanisms for automatic compensation or refunds in cases of prolonged service outages or significant deviations from advertised service standards.
