HURIWA described the judgment as a “constitutional coup” that threatens Nigeria’s democracy. In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group argued that the verdict contradicts a long-standing Supreme Court principle that prohibits federal authorities from withholding statutory allocations to states.
The organization contended that the ruling endangers Rivers State and Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration, characterizing it as a strategic move to destabilize his government through judicial means. They stated, “Such partisan judgments blatantly contradict the principles of judicial impartiality; the judiciary should uphold constitutional protections rather than support specific political agendas.”
HURIWA warned that withholding financial allocations could lead to civil unrest, as various groups in the region have threatened to disrupt critical infrastructure, including oil pipelines, in retaliation. The group emphasized that the court’s ruling exacerbates existing tensions and could further destabilize the region.
“The judgment is like pouring gasoline on the flames of political discord in Rivers State, appearing to intentionally provoke civil instability,” HURIWA said. They added that Justice Abdulmalik’s decision undermines the legitimacy of Governor Fubara’s elected administration, rendering it unconstitutional and akin to a plot to remove the governor without due process.
