The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly stated that no new South-South zonal congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be conducted beyond the one held on Saturday in Calabar, Cross River State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Addressing delegates at the congress, Wike challenged the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), asserting that the election was both legitimate and final. He urged party members to elect leaders who would protect and strengthen the PDP, emphasizing the need for strong leadership to move the party forward.

“The South-South remains PDP’s strongest zone in Nigeria and will continue to be,” Wike declared. “Nowhere in the constitution does it say a congress should be postponed because of personal engagements like weddings or travel. There has never been a congress where every delegate was present. The constitution also does not state that the NWC should conduct the congress, but rather the zone itself. Let me be clear—this is the final South-South zonal congress. After today’s election, no other congress will hold.”

He further stated, “This is our domain, and we are experienced in this process. No one can intimidate me, and I don’t need to be a governor to stand my ground. We must be honest with ourselves, unite as a party, and elect leaders who will defend and uphold the PDP.”

Zonal Chairman Dan Orbih, speaking at the event, acknowledged that internal issues had weakened the party in the region. He stressed that a leader’s association should not define the party’s direction. Orbih expressed optimism that the congress would help reposition the PDP and initiate its rebuilding process.

Meanwhile, the PDP’s NWC has distanced itself from the Calabar congress, further fueling tensions within the party.
