In a recent turn of events, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the February 25 election, along with another member, has been handed a suspension by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) due to alleged anti-party activities. This suspension, effective immediately, will last for an initial six months. CoNTINUE READING
In a media briefing held in Lagos, the BoT also announced the suspension of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). This comes on the heels of the party’s NWC announcing, on August 24, the suspension of both the founder of the party, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary, Major.
The BoT’s announcement also brought forth the appointment of new national officers, with Dr. Agbo Major appointed as the acting National Chairman, and Mr. Ogini Olaposi as the acting National Secretary. They are joined by 18 other appointed officials. The suspensions were confirmed during the party’s special general assembly at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, Lagos.
Babayo Abdulahi, the BoT Secretary, while addressing the media, accused Kwankwaso of unauthorized liaisons with several political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s candidate, Peter Obi. The BoT took further steps to strip Kwankwaso of his NNPP national leader status. CoNTINUE READING
Abdulahi emphasized that the recent suspension of the NNPP founder was a blatant violation of the party’s constitution. He informed the public of Aniebonam’s resignation from his position as BoT chairman, succeeded by Dr. Chief Tope Aluko. Abdulahi also took up the mantle as the new BoT Secretary, while High Chief Tony Obioha became the BoT spokesperson.
A significant aspect of this development is the nullification of the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM), and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) due to the actions of the NWC.
Abdulahi elaborated, “The BoT found substantial public evidence affirming Kwankwaso’s engagement in anti-party activities. His unauthorized discussions with the President, Atiku, and Obi have led to a six-month suspension while a thorough investigation is conducted.”
The acting chairman expressed his team’s intention to heal the party’s wounds and maintain its people-oriented ideology.
This special general assembly meeting witnessed a significant turnout, including the new NWC and members from various parts of the country.
