Earlier on August 24th, the NNPP’s NWC had announced the suspension of the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, and the national publicity secretary, Mr. Major.
Speaking after the assembly in Lagos on Tuesday, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, the secretary of the BoT, accused Kwankwaso of engaging with President Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, without the authorization of the board. As a result, Mr. Kwankwaso’s position as the national leader of NNPP was revoked by the board.
Mr. Abdulahi emphasized that the suspension of the party’s founder, Mr. Aniebonam, was a direct violation of the NNPP’s constitution.
He revealed that Aniebonam had resigned as the BoT chairman, leading to the election of a new BoT chairman, Tope Aluko, with Mr. Abdulahi as the new BoT secretary and Tony Obioha as the BoT spokesperson.
Mr. Abdulahi stated, “The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggesting political discussions with the President, Atiku, and Obi without authorization from the board.
This has earned him a six-month suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.”
The BoT also declared that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM), and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) prior to the election had been invalidated by the actions of the NWC.
Agbo Major, the acting chairman, expressed his commitment to mend the divisions caused by the suspended NWC members. He reassured that the party would remain people-oriented and open to members’ return.
He stated, “We don’t intend to shut anybody out or censor anybody but we want to ensure that we remain on track and maintain our people-oriented ideology.”
The special general assembly meeting garnered attendance from the new NWC and members nationwide.
