In a concise statement released through the JAMB account on the X platform, it was stated, “To ensure that Direct Entry applicants do not face undue stress due to the failure of some institutions to verify their A-level results promptly, JAMB has decided that, starting from the 2024 admission year, such institutions will be barred from participating in Direct Entry programs.”
Meanwhile, social critic and human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has accused the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of imposing excessive fees on students for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Yesufu suggested that JAMB’s practices could widen educational disparities by placing undue financial strain on economically disadvantaged and vulnerable students.
In a social media post, Aisha Yesufu argued that JAMB should not operate as a profit-oriented organization. This came after Vice President Kashim Shettima mentioned during a public engagement organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, generated over N50 billion for the Federal Government within a year.
Shettima highlighted the issue of corruption in the public sector and noted that before Oloyede’s tenure, JAMB had never contributed up to N1 million to the Federal Government. Yesufu took exception to this statement, suggesting that JAMB might be imposing excessive charges on Nigerian students.
