IPOB Warns Against Exploiting Nnamdi Kanu’s Name For Political Gains, Issues Caution To Kalu

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stern warning to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to desist from exploiting the name of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for his personal political agenda. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been held in detention by the Department of State Services since 2021, following his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria. The Supreme Court’s decision on December 15 allowed for his trial on terrorism charges brought forth by the Federal Government.

In a statement released on Wednesday, IPOB admonished Kalu, cautioning him against manipulating the political persecution of Kanu for his self-serving political motives. The group asserted that it has moved beyond engaging in political games and tactics.

The statement emphasized, “Kalu has consistently featured in print and social media, claiming to be working diligently for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. However, IPOB and Kanu have become mere rhetoric for him, lacking any authentic interest in the IPOB struggle or the unconditional release of Kanu from the Federal Government’s unjust persecution and illegal detention.”

IPOB expressed dismay at the alleged actions of some Igbo politicians, branding them as self-serving individuals determined to undermine the efforts of IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group contended that without the presence of IPOB, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, many villages in the South-East would have fallen under terrorist occupation.

The group urged the public to disregard Benjamin Kalu and similar figures, asserting that their deceptive tactics would not succeed among the intelligent men and women within IPOB and the broader Biafran community. IPOB warned that those working against its members, ESN, and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would face consequences for their actions in due time.

IPOB also called on Kalu to intervene with President Bola Tinubu to prevent any harm befalling Kanu while in custody, emphasizing that the responsibility for Kanu’s fate lies with the government. The statement criticized the government for not releasing Kanu despite court orders and urged Kalu to advocate for adherence to the rule of law.
