In a parallel development, Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria, the daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), was nominated for a judgeship in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory. This decision was made at a meeting chaired by her father-in-law, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Justice Ariwoola is slated to retire from Nigeria’s judiciary in August of this year.

During the meeting, the NJC also took disciplinary actions against two judges: Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court and Justice G. B. Brikins-Okolosi of Delta State High Court. Justice Ekwo was reprimanded for misusing discretionary power by wrongly granting an ex-parte order, while Justice G. B. Brikins-Okolosi received a warning for failing to deliver a judgment within the specified period.

Additionally, Justice Amina Shehu of Yobe State High Court was cautioned for issuing a Writ of Possession without a subsisting judgment.

The NJC, presided over by CJN Olukayode Ariwoola, reviewed 35 petitions against judges from Federal and State High Courts. Eight committees were set up to further investigate meritorious petitions.

The NJC dismissed petitions lacking merit, evidence of misconduct, or those deemed sub judice or appealable. Notable among the dismissed petitions were those against Justices A. M. Liman, A. A. Okeke, and D. E. Osiagor of the Federal High Court, among others.

The council also noted retirements of three judicial officers, including CJN Olukayode Ariwoola, and the passing of three judges.

Furthermore, the NJC recommended 86 judicial officers for appointments to various courts, including the Court of Appeal, High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Sharia Courts of Appeal, and Customary Courts of Appeal across Nigeria.
