In Abuja on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced that the administration may carve out new ministries from the existing ones. The ministerial list was submitted to the National Assembly by Gbajabiamila and read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Gbajabiamila stated, “The President intends to reorganize or partition the ministries in such a way that we may hear of new ministries that were not standalone entities before. Thus, the process continues.”

The 28 ministerial nominees, including Abubakar Momoh, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Ahmed Dangiwa, Hannatu Musawa, Chief Uche Nnaji, Dr Betta Edu, Dr Doris Aniche Uzoka, David Umahi, and Nyesom Wike, amongst others, were selected after rigorous personal screening by the President, according to Gbajabiamila.

He added that an additional part consisting of 13 names will be sent to the assembly as part of the process of establishing a cabinet for the administration.

“As per the constitution, he had 60 days from the inauguration. Today, by submitting 28 names, he has met the constitutional requirement. As stated in his letter and read on the Senate floor, the remaining names, likely around 12 or 13, will be forwarded to the Senate in the coming days,” he said.

Gbajabiamila mentioned that the president chose not to associate portfolios with the nominees in the letter to the Senate to allow room for changes. This approach prevents a situation where a nominee is screened for a particular portfolio, only for the president to later decide they would be better suited for another role, thus avoiding the necessity of another screening.
