The initial resumption date, set for Tuesday, January 23, 2024, was revised to the new date in the communication, and Rotimi’s memo expressed regrets for any inconveniences caused by the adjustment.

The Green Chamber had initiated a 3-week recess on Saturday, December 30, 2023, following the passage of the N28 trillion Appropriation Bill (now Act) for the 2024 Fiscal Year in accordance with its constitutional powers.

Before the recess, the House, since its inauguration in June 2023, had addressed various critical issues such as peace and security, social welfare, healthcare, education, infrastructure development, and economic growth. Through robust debates, bipartisan collaboration, and a commitment to constitutional duties, the House successfully passed essential bills and adopted resolutions shaping the country’s future.

During a special session on December 30 to finalize the budget, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen commended members for their dedication, unity of purpose, and constructive engagement in debates. He acknowledged their patriotism and sacrifices, including working on weekends and public holidays.

The speaker highlighted that 500 motions on pressing issues were adopted, and 962 bills had been received since the House’s inauguration. Out of these, 120 bills had passed a second reading and were currently undergoing in-depth analysis at the committee stage.

Among the notable bills passed during this period was the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2023, assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 23, 2023.

Rotimi emphasized that legislative work continued extensively at the House committee level during the recess, and members actively engaged in constituency outreaches across the country. In alignment with its 8-point Legislative Agenda, the House remained committed to improving constituents’ living standards and contributing to Nigeria’s overall peace and development.
