In a statement on Saturday, Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, announced that unauthorized processions are now banned due to safety concerns. This decision follows intelligence reports that some criminals are exploiting genuine protests as a cover to cause chaos and commit looting.
While the council acknowledges citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and assembly, it stressed that security forces will not tolerate any exploitation of these rights for criminal purposes.
The council has urged residents to adhere to the curfew from 6 pm to 8 am and report suspicious activities to the Security Operations Room. The measures are intended to maintain order and protect public and private properties following recent incidents of unrest.
“The Kaduna State Security Council, led by Governor Uba Sani, has reviewed the current security situation, including the curfew and other public safety issues. We have determined that criminals posing as protesters with the intent to disrupt the state will face strict consequences,” the statement said.
The council emphasized that while the rights to lawful assembly are protected, they will not allow criminals to use protests as a means to vandalize and terrorize. The events of August 1 and August 5, 2024, demonstrate the need for these precautions, as intelligence indicates that criminals are targeting vulnerable individuals, including children, to further their agenda.
The statement concluded by urging citizens to comply with the curfew and report any dangerous activities to the Security Operations Room at 09034000060 or 08170189999. Following recent disturbances, the state government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna and Zaria Metropolitan areas, which has since been adjusted to the current curfew hours to allow for essential activities.
