The persistent issue of flight delays without adequate explanations or compensation has been a longstanding challenge within the nation’s aviation sector. Previous administrations failed to address this concern, causing distress to air travelers already grappling with soaring ticket prices.
Minister Keyamo acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter and emphasized the need for a cautious approach to avoid deterring potential investors. He affirmed the ministry’s readiness to enforce international laws governing delays and compensation for customers.
Expressing empathy for the difficulties faced by Nigerians affected by flight delays, Keyamo acknowledged the gravity of the situation. He recognized the complexity of the issue, suggesting that sanctions such as closing down airlines could exacerbate the problem due to a shortage of local carriers. Striking a delicate balance, he emphasized the importance of providing relief to customers and exploring measures to alleviate their concerns.
Keyamo revealed plans to collaborate with insurance companies to cover passengers and their flight tickets. These insurers would be stationed at every airport nationwide, ready to intervene in cases of flight delays or cancellations, ensuring that passengers are not left stranded.
Addressing the relocation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters from Abuja to Lagos, Keyamo asserted that this move is non-negotiable. He argued that this decision would save the government and the people of Nigeria significant resources spent on air tickets for FAAN officials commuting between the two cities. Keyamo highlighted the financial burden incurred by FAAN’s lack of digitalization, disclosing that the Authority spent nearly half a billion naira annually on flight tickets for officials shuttling between Lagos and Abuja for routine administrative tasks.
