The lifeless bodies of Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru were discovered in the room by neighbors early in the morning. A third student, Mercy Ojochegbe, who was still breathing, was promptly rushed to the hospital.
Aya explained, “When they slept inside their room, a generator was switched on close to the window of their apartment. They all slept off and inhaled carbon monoxide as a result of the generator set that was on.”
The tragic incident was reported at the B division of the Nigeria Police Force in Lokoja, and an investigation is currently underway.
SP William Ovye Aya emphasized the importance of safety, urging residents to be cautious when using generators at home. He advised people to maintain a safe distance between the generator and living spaces, cautioning against placing generators close to windows.
“People should be very careful once they are using a generator set in their homes. They should give it a distance and also it should not be closer to the window where they are living,” he warned. Aya emphasized the need for safety precautions, stating, “Safety should always be our watchword,” and encouraged the public to prioritize safety to prevent incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning.
