Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi (retd.), who died on Sunday at the age of 75.
In a heartfelt condolence message to the family of the late Admiral Ogohi, Governor Ododo hailed him as a distinguished son of Kogi State and one of Nigeria’s most outstanding military leaders, whose contributions were pivotal in preserving the unity of Nigeria during challenging times.
“Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi was a remarkable military officer and a statesman dedicated to fostering unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians throughout his lifetime,” Governor Ododo remarked.
“His illustrious military career was marked by significant sacrifices in service to our nation’s unity. Even in retirement, he continued to serve as an esteemed elder statesman, contributing immensely to the development of Kogi State and serving as a beacon of inspiration to many across the nation and beyond.”
“Nigeria and the people of Kogi State have lost a distinguished military officer and a rare statesman,” Governor Ododo lamented.
Highlighting the impact and sacrifices of the late Admiral Ogohi, Governor Ododo emphasized that Kogi State mourns the loss of one of its foremost leaders, whose wise counsel and guidance will be sorely missed in consultations on the state’s policies and programs.
Governor Ododo offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Admiral Ogohi’s soul and urged his family to find solace in his exemplary service and contributions as a military officer and statesman.
Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff from 1999 to 2003 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was the first naval officer to hold the position. Born in November 1948, he passed away in the early hours of Sunday, June 30, 2024, and has been laid to rest in his hometown of OKura Olafia, Dekina local government area of Kogi State.
