The development signals a major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The spokesman of the movement, Habibu Mohammed, said the decision was reached after unanimous approval by key stakeholders.

He explained that delegates from all 44 local government areas in Kano State met at Kwankwaso’s residence, where they collectively endorsed the move.

“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” Mohammed said.

He also disclosed that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, is expected to join the NDC alongside Kwankwaso.

“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” he added.

According to him, negotiations with the NDC are about 90 per cent completed, with only minor details remaining.

Mohammed said the decision was largely driven by the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC.

He pointed to the recent Supreme Court ruling, which referred the dispute back to the Federal High Court, as a source of continued uncertainty.

“It does not look feasible to stay there… the entire caucus voted unanimously that a better platform, not embedded in a leadership tussle, should be used,” he told The Cable.

He also cited legal battles and upcoming INEC deadlines for party membership submissions as additional reasons for the planned move.

According to him, remaining in the ADC could undermine the political plans of the movement.

He said the group had considered both the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the NDC before eventually choosing the latter.

He further noted that internal disagreements within the ADC, particularly over consensus candidacy, contributed to the decision.

The report also indicated that Obi has been absent from recent ADC meetings since the opposition summit in Ibadan, allegedly due to dissatisfaction with unresolved zoning arrangements for the presidential ticket.
