Shortly after news of his dismissal broke, Coach Tunde Sanni declined to defend himself or give his own account. Speaking with Naija News, he simply said:....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Anything they say is final. You can confirm from them.”

When pressed further, the former Kwara United boss repeated his stance:

“I give you permission, anything they said is final. Don’t bother about my own side.”

His remarks underscored the quiet manner in which he has chosen to bow out—a decision coming at a turbulent time for the Ilorin-based club.

The club’s management confirmed his sack on Sunday evening, just hours after United suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The loss followed their CAF Confederation Cup exit at the hands of Ghana’s Asante Kotoko on a 5–3 aggregate—a double blow that convinced the board a change was necessary.

In a statement through the club’s media department, Chairman Kumbi Titiloye announced:

“Following the disappointing home loss, Coach Tunde Sanni has been asked to step aside as Technical Adviser. Assistant Coach Ashifat Suleiman will take charge of the team with immediate effect.”

Sunday’s defeat again exposed many of Kwara United’s lingering problems. Despite dominating possession and creating chances in the first half, the team failed to convert. Just after the restart, a handball inside the box gifted Abia Warriors a penalty, which Emeka Obioma converted in the 48th minute. United never found a way back.

Frustrated fans left the Kwara State Stadium voicing concerns not only about the result but also about recurring tactical weaknesses. Their discontent had been building since the Confederation Cup campaign ended, with many questioning Sanni’s controversial decision to bench striker Shola Abdulraheem, who had scored in the first leg.

While Kwara United currently sit 10th on the NPFL table with eight points from six matches, expectations had been much higher following last season’s progress. The mid-table spot may not look disastrous, but inconsistency has stalled the club’s ambition to challenge rivals at the top.

Sanni himself had earlier admitted disappointment after the Confederation Cup exit but insisted the squad could recover. That optimism, however, did little to calm tensions, and the home defeat to Abia Warriors proved the breaking point.

Now, the responsibility falls on Assistant Coach Suleiman, whose first assignment is a rescheduled clash against Kano Pillars on Wednesday. The game is already seen as a test of his ability to stabilise the squad and restore confidence to a faltering side.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife about who might take the job permanently. Reports link the club with veteran coach Gbenga Ogunbote, who left Shooting Stars before the season began, while Flying Eagles boss Aliyu Zubairu is also said to be on the shortlist as Kwara United weigh options for a more experienced technical adviser.
