Local residents, represented by De Renaissance Patriots Foundation and Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum, have filed a motion demanding transparency about the payment. They seek detailed information on how this substantial sum was handled, why no public statement was made, and how the funds were allocated.
The motion, filed under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and the Freedom of Information Act 2011, names Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Attorney General of Lagos State, and other officials as respondents. The court has registered the motion as Suit No FHC/L/CS/1603/2024, filed on September 6, 2024.
Lead counsel Yakubu Eleto criticized the discrepancy between Dangote’s recent statements and earlier assurances from former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola that the land was provided free of charge. Eleto highlighted ongoing neglect in the area and called for clarity on the $100 million payment.
The case is expected to be assigned to a judge on September 10, 2024.
