Lagos Market To Get Centralized Generator System, Government Reveals Plans

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services are implementing plans to install a centralized generator in the Lagos Island market to reduce frequent fire incidents. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized collective responsibility in preventing fires during the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference. He highlighted that many fires stem from negligent behavior, urging market traders to be accountable. Sanwo-Olu stressed the theme of “Stakeholders collaboration: A solution to ongoing fire disasters in Lagos,” urging market leaders to take proactive steps.

Sanwo-Olu stated, “Irresponsible behavior and negligence are major causes of fires. Over the past five years, our government has built fire stations and acquired 64 fire engines, recruiting over a thousand firefighters. However, responsibility also lies with market traders. Incidents arise from storing petrol and placing generators on rooftops.”

LSFRS Director Margaret Adeseye attributed fires to negligence, calling for stakeholder cooperation to find lasting solutions. She disclosed plans for a centralized generator to replace individual units in Lagos Island markets, stressing collective responsibility for fire prevention and safety. Adeseye noted ongoing efforts by a government committee to reposition the market, aiming to eradicate unsafe practices.

Commissioner Olugbenga Oyerinde highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering partnerships for effective emergency management and fire prevention using global technological advancements.
