The captain, who was in plain clothes, was attempting to mediate in a dispute between the lance corporal and a police officer who had violated the state-imposed curfew.

Tragically, the lance corporal mistakenly shot the officer, leading to his death at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital in Yola.

The incident caused panic among local residents, prompting some to flee their homes fearing military arrests. Despite attempts to contact the acting army public relations officer for the 23 Armoured Brigade, no response was received.
