Speaking at an event commemorating International Students Day in Abakaliki, under the theme ‘Nurturing Ebonyi Students Welfare through the People’s Charter of Needs.
the governor, represented by his Special Assistant on Internally Generated Revenue, Mr. Martin Okwuegbu, urged students to avoid cultism, indecent dressing, and other social vices.
Governor Nwifuru emphasized that parents send their children to university with the expectation that they will graduate and positively impact themselves, their families, and society.
He highlighted the prevalence of social vices in tertiary institutions and advised students not to succumb to peer pressure.
The governor remarked, “There are many social vices going on in society today, and it begins at the tertiary institutions. We should not be pressured by peer groups.
The issue of cultism, indecent dressing is now going on in different names. On the basis of content creation, people do all sorts of things just to attract a fan base; that’s not the way to go.”
He also noted the evolving nature of students’ unionism and emphasized the unique focus of the event, aiming to nurture Ebonyi students through the People’s Charter of Needs.
In his earlier remarks, Comrade Joshua Nwafor, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, described students as leaders of today and tomorrow, encouraging them to seize available opportunities to make a positive impact in society.
