Earlier this year, the Joint Action for Good Governance, a civil society organization, urged the government to implement a nationwide ban on styrofoam due to increasing concerns about its health risks. Consequently, the legislators are urging the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and other relevant agencies to oversee the quality of packaging for food and beverages, particularly in fast-moving consumer goods, ensuring adherence to global best practices.
These resolutions were reached during a plenary session following the adoption of a motion titled, “Need to ban the use and distribution of styrofoam and single-use plastic across the country,” presented by Mr. Muktar Shagaya, representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency, Kwara State. Shagaya highlighted the constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government to protect and enhance the environment, emphasizing the environmental and public health risks associated with the escalating use of styrofoam and single-use plastics in Nigeria.
The motion noted the chemical links of styrofoam to health issues such as cancer, vision and hearing loss, impaired memory and concentration, and nervous system effects. Several countries and regions, including Taiwan, Rwanda, England, and some states in the United States, have already prohibited styrofoam. Lagos and Abia states in Nigeria have also banned the product.
Acknowledging the availability of alternatives like biodegradable materials, reusable containers, and recyclable packaging, the House stressed the importance of adopting these alternatives to reduce environmental impact and public health risks. To ensure compliance, the House mandated its Committees on Healthcare Services, Environment, and Legislative Compliance to address the environmental and public health crises associated with styrofoam and single-use plastics, aiming to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources, ecosystems, and the well-being of its citizens. The Lagos State Government had previously announced a ban on styrofoam in January.
