Legal Action: Former Ebonyi PDP Boss Remanded As National Vice Chairman Faces SuspensionAn Abakaliki Magistrate Court in Ebonyi State has ordered the remand of Mr. Augustine Nwazunku, a former acting state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with three other individuals, for alleged involvement in cultism, forgery, and impersonation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā–¶

Nwazunku, along with Obinna Nwachukwu, Njoku Nwagu, and Ogbonnaya Idika, is accused of unlawfully suspending Ali Odefa, the South East National Vice Chairman of the PDP, from the party. The trio recently held a press conference where they claimed to be the executives of the Ogudu-Okwor Ward in Oshiri.

Odefa, who is from the ward, stated that the suspension was invalid since those who issued it were not recognized executives of the PDP. Following the incident, the suspects were arrested and subsequently charged in court on Tuesday.

Court documents reveal that Nwachukwu, Nwagwu, and Idika allegedly forged a letter purporting to be from the PDP executives of Ogudu-Okwor Ward in Oshiri, which falsely claimed that Odefa had been suspended due to anti-party activities. Additionally, they are suspected members of the Vikings Confraternity, a banned secret cult group.

Magistrate Ojemba Isu-Oko denied bail to all four suspects and remanded them in custody until November 18. Last week, the PDP executive members in Odefa’s ward had officially suspended him for purported anti-party activities, a move Odefa dismissed as illegitimate. He later filed a petition with the police, leading to the arrest of several ward leaders.

Herbert Ovuta, who claims to be the acting chairman of the PDP in Ogudu-Okwor Ward, accused Odefa of intimidation. In a statement, Ovuta claimed that on September 7, 2024, Odefa and unidentified armed men invaded the homes of some party members, abducting them and taking them to an unknown location.

According to Ovuta, the kidnapped members were later found at the SWAT detention facility at the police headquarters in Abakaliki, where they showed signs of torture. He alleged that within hours of their abduction, they were charged with cultism, threats against Odefa, forgery, and impersonation.

Ovuta criticized Odefa’s actions as unlawful and oppressive, refuting claims that he and others were not legitimate ward executives. He explained that following the defection of the former Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly to the APC, stakeholders had nominated new party executives, who were approved by the Onicha LGA executives and the State Working Committee of the PDP.

He accused the police of failing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrests and suggested that Odefa’s motives were part of a larger scheme to destabilize the PDP in Ebonyi State, benefiting the ruling APC. Ovuta called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to look into potential compromises within the Ebonyi State Command against members of their party.
