candidate, Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, against Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Plateau State gubernatorial election.
Governor Mutfwang was declared the winner of the March 18 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), securing 525,299 votes against 17 other candidates, including Goshwe, who garnered 481,370 votes.
Goshwe contested Mutfwang’s victory at the tribunal, asserting that the governor wasn’t validly nominated by the PDP, which lacked the organizational structure to sponsor a candidate. He further alleged that Mutfwang’s election didn’t adhere to the Electoral Act and that the PDP candidate didn’t secure the majority of lawful votes.
However, a unanimous judgment by the three-member tribunal, led by Justice R. Irele-Ifijeh, dismissed the petition as lacking merit. Dissatisfied, the APC candidate appealed the decision, urging the appellate court to declare him the winner based on Governor Mutfwang’s alleged lack of qualification due to invalid party sponsorship.
