Sources within both parties disclosed that the former Kano State governor is expected to formally announce his move in Kano, where he will be received by the ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola.

He is also expected to join the party alongside former Kano Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, who recently resigned from office. The planned defection follows months of engagement between Kwankwaso and the ADC as part of efforts to strengthen opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

During earlier negotiations, Kwankwaso was said to have demanded the party’s vice-presidential ticket as a condition for joining, with reports suggesting he considered a possible alliance with Peter Obi. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was also believed to have played a role in encouraging the talks.

The discussions intensified after Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a close ally of Kwankwaso, defected from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress earlier this year.

Although the former governor initially delayed his move after insisting on assurances regarding the vice-presidential slot, party insiders say he has now agreed to join the ADC without any preconditions following further consultations, including a meeting with Aregbesola in Abuja.

Sources within the NNPP confirmed that Kwankwaso is expected in Kano ahead of the declaration, which is anticipated to attract a large number of supporters.

Efforts to get official confirmation from party spokespersons were unsuccessful, as both ADC and NNPP representatives declined to comment on the development.

The move comes shortly after Kwankwaso hosted key political figures, including Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, at his Kano residence in what he described as a meeting of unity among allies.
