Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emphasized the imperative of eradicating street trading and the illegal dumping of refuse on road medians, labeling them as uncivil behaviors that demand eradication within the state.
Makinde conveyed this stance during his address at the commissioning of the Idi Ape and Civic Centre, Agodi Gate junction improvement projects on Friday. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished personalities including Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, former Military Administrator of the state, Major General Oladayo Popoola, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, and PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja.
Highlighting the significance of the junction improvements, Makinde emphasized their role in reducing residents’ commuting time within the city. He underscored that the project aimed to restore order to these areas, stressing that stringent measures would be enforced against street trading and refuse dumping on road medians.
Addressing the displacement of 700 street traders due to project execution, Makinde reassured them of allocated free stalls in the new market constructed in the area. He reiterated the commitment to fostering a cleaner and more organized environment, emphasizing the need to deter uncivil practices among citizens.
“We are making a clear statement, and those familiar with Ibadan would acknowledge the disorder this area used to witness. Through this project, we are instilling order in this vicinity. The allocated shops are intended for those trading by the roadside, and they will be provided free of charge. This signifies that 700 individuals will transition from street trading to formal market spaces. We are grateful for this development,” Makinde affirmed.
He concluded by affirming the administration’s resolve to maintain the newfound beauty of the environment and reiterated the strict enforcement against street trading and illegal refuse dumping, urging citizens to uphold civic responsibilities and contribute to a cleaner, more orderly society.
